A Return to Love: A Message for International Women's Day

creating divorce first steps healing living your best life parenting post traumatic growth Mar 06, 2024

As International Women's Day approaches, I felt called to share with you a quote that has been a beacon of light for me in my own journey of creating an extraordinary life after divorce.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. (…) And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

This is a quote from A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson.  My purpose in sharing this quote with you is that it would inspire you to embrace your light and find hope and strength in it—whether you're in the midst of deciding about your marriage, in the throes of a recent separation, or forging a new path after divorce.

To Those of You Contemplating Divorce

If you're at a crossroads, considering the daunting step of divorce, it's natural to feel a tremendous amount of uncertainty and self-doubt. You might be wrestling with questions about what the future holds and whether you're enough on your own. It's in these moments that Marianne Williamson’s wisdom whispers a gentle yet powerful reminder: our true fear lies in recognizing our immense power. This is a loving nudge to look beyond your fears and see the incredible potential within you. As you stand at this threshold, gently ask yourself, "Why shouldn't I embrace being brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?" Whatever choice you make, know that giving yourself permission to be fully who you are, in this relationship or not, will lead you to a life filled with self-discovery and true joy.

To Those of You in the Early Stages of Separation

Navigating the initial phase of separation can feel like moving through the world blindfolded. But amidst this, Marianne Williamson offers a beacon of hope: it is our light, not our darkness, that truly frightens us. This journey of separation is as much about finding your own beautiful, bright path as it is about walking through the night. It’s a precious chance to rediscover yourself, separate from your partnership, and let your light shine in ways you might never have thought possible. Although this time may be challenging, it's also filled with the potential for incredible personal growth and empowerment. Embrace it as an opportunity to emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.

To Those of You Recreating Yourselves After Divorce

Embarking on the journey to rebuild and reinvent yourself after a divorce is nothing short of heroic. Marianne Williamson reminds us, “Your playing small does not serve the world,” calling each of us to recognize our inner brilliance. You carry within you a unique blend of talents and strengths that the world desperately needs. As you step onto this path of self-reinvention, allow yourself the freedom to fully be who you are meant to be. In doing so, you’re not just lighting your own way; you're also a beacon for others, inspiring them to find and embrace their true selves. Which brings me to my final and perhaps most important thought to share with you…

Being an Example for Our Daughters

As mothers, we bear a profound responsibility—not only to ourselves but to our daughters. They are watching us, learning from our choices, our struggles, and our successes. By choosing to embrace our own light, we teach our daughters to recognize and celebrate their own power. In facing our fears and stepping into our full potential, we set an example of strength, resilience, and grace. It is through our journey towards self-actualization and fulfillment that we lay the groundwork for our daughters to live without the constraints of fear, to aspire to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous without apology. Our liberation becomes their legacy, our courage, their blueprint.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, let's honor the light within us and the journey of transformation that many of us are on. Remember, you are "powerful beyond measure," capable of brilliance, beauty, talent, and fabulousness. In recognizing and embracing your own power, you pave the way for an extraordinary life—a life that inspires, empowers, and liberates not just yourself, but all who witness your journey, especially our daughters. xo
